Overview: In 2020, Oars + Alps launched their men's lifestyle and wellness skincare product, and wanted to create a brand campaign that would resonate with their target audience. They partnered with professional football player DeAndre Hopkins to tell his personal story of perseverance and how Oars + Alps products played a role in his daily routine. The resulting 30-second branded video spot was the centerpiece of a broader PR and social media campaign.
Challenge:To create a branded video spot that captured DeAndre Hopkins' personal story while showcasing Oars + Alps products in a natural and authentic way.
Solution: Our team worked closely with DeAndre Hopkins to explore his personal story and discover the things that kept him motivated through adversity. We developed a script that felt authentic and allowed DeAndre to deliver his lines like a voicemail to a family member, creating a casual and natural feel. We made sure to get DeAndre's feedback on the script before recording, to ensure it truly resonated with him.
To create a visual style that felt natural and authentic, we shot on 16mm film with a mostly naturalistic approach to lighting and camera work. In certain scenes, we used more contrast in the lighting to create a pensive mood, using longer lenses and zooms to emphasize an observational documentary style-feeling.
Execution: On the day of the shoot, we worked closely with DeAndre and the production team to capture real moments from his daily routines. We made sure to showcase the Oars + Alps products in a way that felt natural and unobtrusive, and captured footage that could be used for pre-rolls, social media, and web content. We also created cutdowns of the 30-second spot as needed for different platforms.
Results:The resulting branded video spot was a huge success, generating significant buzz on social media and garnering positive feedback from Oars + Alps' target audience.
